Heavenly Greens St. George’s is blessed with a sizable property on the corner of Church and Queen Streets in downtown Moncton. In 2021 the Vestry decided to transform the side lawn into ‘Heavenly Greens’ for the glory of God and for the following purposes:
To highlight the beauty and mystery of creation
To model sustainable agriculture practices in an urban environment
To connect the Congregation with community agencies and community friends
A work day on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 was the official ‘kick off’. First St. George’s Scouts built seven raised beds of rough hemlock lumber. Using raised vegetable garden beds, Heavenly Greens will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Eventually, with plastic covers, these beds will also assist in extending the growing season.
Other aspects of the project will hopefully include: composting, rain water collection, solar lighting, bird houses, bat houses, a rest area, and flower beds. You will get ‘the picture’ from our logo! In our dreams, we hope that Heavenly Greens will become a place for our Congregation and people in our community to meet and work together.
We envision opportunities for educational workshops and maybe even the possibility of sustaining a paid position.
