This Sunday School Financial Report is printed here to replace the one in the Parish Annual Report booklet. By accident the Sunday School Financial Report for 2007 was copied. However, something good has come from this, because we have set before us the need to encourage our children (including mine) to give freely of what they possess – be it time, a talent, or money.
As you can see, last year’s offerings amounted only to $86.15 – not near enough to cover the cost of our Foster Child’s sponsorship. Thankfully, we had some available savings from past years to cover the deficit.
No doubt you have noticed that I have been speaking to the children about giving one-tenth of their money in their weekly offering envelope towards this sponsorship or towards the relief work in Haiti. Interestingly, not one of them has protested.
This idea of giving one-tenth of what we have is mentioned very early in the Book of Genesis with Abraham, the Patriarch of Israel. ‘But why?’ someone will ask, ‘God doesn’t need our money. Afterall, He is Almighty and Everlasting.’ True, and, in the words of the Rev. LeDrew Gardner, “It is not our possessions God is after, but our love, our trust, our confidence, our acknowledgement of our dependence on Him. This relationship is necessary before tithes and offerings can become a normal part of one’s life. Giving is the outcome of loving. The more one loves, the more one gives.” May He help us to love Him more not only with our lips but in our lives.

The next Parish Shared Meal has been set to follow the 10AM Service on February 21st, the Second Sunday in Lent. We will be joined by 1st St. George’s Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, their leaders and families. The main course will be provided; however, your help would be much appreciated in the dessert department, if possible. Please note that the Eucharist will be celebrated as usual on February 21st, but at 10AM we will pray Morning Prayer (and, at 9:15AM, the Litany).
Palms, please! In preparation for Ash Wednesday, please bring your palms from last year to the Pancake Supper. Thank you!
The beginning of the Lenten season comes this Wednesday – Ash Wednesday – February 17th. The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated twice: at 10 A.M. at People’s Park Tower Chapel; and at 7 P.M. in our Church. For those who wish, ashes will be imposed. The first part of the Ash Wednesday Liturgy is found in the Penitential Rite on pages 611-615 of the Prayer Book. May the Lord help us to use this opportunity to our soul’s health as we begin this holy season.
Lenten coin cards can be picked up at the back of the Church. The coin cards present both a challenge and an opportunity for us to set aside a little extra money as an offering to Almighty God – so let’s do our best for His glory.
The Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday through Lent in the Chapel beginning this Friday at 7 P.M. This devotion of Scripture and Prayer first came into use in the WesternChurch in the 15th century. Its origin was in the time of the Crusades, when pilgrims to the Holy Land marked off the sites associated with our Lord’s Passion in Jerusalem, which they called stations. On returning to their homes in Europe, they continued the devotion by erecting in their churches, or in the fields, memorials of these stations or stopping places. The Stations of the Cross is a very moving devotion which lasts a half hour. Please come and spend some time at the Cross.
There will be NO Tuesday Morning Bible Study this week. However, we will begin a new session on February 23rd using video presentations by retired Bishop of South Carolina, Ed Salmon. Please come and join us at 10AM at 56 Williams St. (near Victoria Park).
A Morning of Training for Deanery Layreaders (on leading Morning Prayer) has been scheduled for Saturday, March 6th at St. Andrew’s Church (Elmwood Drive). We will begin at 9:30AM and finish with lunch at 12Noon. (No registration fee or cost for lunch).
