Monthly Community Dinner
In October, 2005 the Vestry members of St. George's decided to provide a free dinner on the second Sunday of each month for those who need it. And what a blessing this venture has been - to us at St. George's! We have made a ton of friends !
What's on the menu?
Our standard fare is roast beef, mashed potatoes, carrots, turnip, gravy, rolls, beef and barley soup, apple pie, tea, coffee and juice. But, we have served turkey, hamburgers, hot dogs and salad plates.
How does it work?
A 'peeler crew' meets with one of the cooking pairs on the Saturday morning before the dinner to prepare all the vegetables and to roll the beef. Then, on Sunday afternoon a team of servers come to wrap cutlery in napkins, set the tables, cut the pies, etc.. This group also serves the food buffet style. Finally, at the beginning of the dinner @ 3:45 pm, the clean-up crew arrives to pick up the dishes, scrape them. Stack them and put them through the dishwasher. On a good day, all the work is done by 6:30 pm. The number of people attending varies; but, on average, we would serve 140 meals before 'seconds' .
There are approximately 70 people from St. George's on the volunteer roster for this community meal. From these come our excellent cooking pairs - four pairs altogether. As was mentioned above, one of the great blessings of the community dinner has been the acquaintances and friendships that have developed among the people of St. George's. In addition to the St. George's volunteers, however, we have also had terrific help from students and staff members of the Altantic Baptist University; from members of the Canada World Youth Team that was in Moncton;; and from the 2007 Cathechism Class from St. Ansleme Roman Catholic Parish. We also benefit greatly from some neighborhood volunteers who regularly come and assist with whatever needs doing. On a final note, our meal begins with a prayer of thanksgiving; and following the meal - are 5:00 pm - everyone is invited to come to the Chapel for Evening Prayer. And usually a few do. "Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!"
