Today is Septuagesima Sunday. ‘Septuagesima’ comes form the Latin for ‘seventieth’ – the seventieth day before Easter. Therefore, Septuagesima Sunday marks a shift in the Church Year: we move from the Epiphany Season towards the Season of Lent. To mark this shift, the Altar cloth has been changed to purple.
Although Septuagesima Sunday points us to the Lenten Season, it is not the beginning of it. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 17th). So, Septuagesima, Sexagesima (February 7) and Quinquagesima (February 14) Sundays are primers. They are signals that the great 40 days for spiritual renewal are coming.
If you read the Epistles and Gospels for the ‘GESIMA’ Sundays carefully, and meditate upon them, you will see that a number of virtues (holy habits) are presented. For example, in addition to faith, hope and charity, we hear of temperance (self-control), justice (right, fair, gracious), fortitude (courage), and prudence (discernment).
Interestingly, the Epistle for Quinquagesima describes the foundation of all virtues – holy Charity.
This morning’s bulletin insert is from the Bishop’s Office. It explains the Nicodemus Project which begins today in our Diocese.
In the Rector’s Annual Report, I have tried to give you some more details on this project. In my opinion, (having been a member of the Struggling Parishes committee and the Budget Support Committee), this initiative is about spiritual renewal – in the hearts and minds of individuals; in parishes; in the whole Diocese. And, the beginning of this renewal is daily prayer and Bible reading. The Anglican pattern for this, of course, is in the offices of Morning and Evening Prayer and the Daily Lectionary – all found in the Book of Common Prayer. To take up this challenge we will need God’s help to be self-controlled, prudent and faithful. He, of course, is Willing and Able! So, let us use these next 70 days to draw near to our Lord in prayer.
Wok with Faith will be held this afternoon 4:30 P.M. in the Church Hall. This program is designed for middle and high school girls, and involves preparing a meal and some good discussion. Please feel free to come and bring (or make) a friend.
The next St. Michael’s Club will meet on Saturday, February 13th from 10:00 A.M. – 11:45 A.M. with a St. Valentine Day theme.
You’re invited to experience a romantic evening at the Second Annual Hospice Greater Moncton Valentine’s Gala. The romance begins at 6 p.m. on February 13, 2010 in the ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Main St., Moncton. Your lovely evening will begin with a Reception and Silent Auction, followed by a five course dinner hosted by Halifax comedian Catherine Robertson. This will include a special presentation by the Danceast Senior Company. Following the dinner, dancing will begin, featuring the Pete Porter and Friends Band. Hospice Greater Moncton/du Grand Moncton is a volunteer organization that works within the community by providing services and support for clients and families within their homes. Our volunteers are trained to give practical and emotional support during the end of life stages, and through the grieving process. Our goal is to build a “Residential Hospice” in our community within the next four years, a home that will provide compassionate, quality 24 hour care for people who can no longer be cared for at home, but do not need to be in hospital.
Your attendance will allow us to continue and enhance our programs, as well as help us achieve our dream of a Residential Hospice. Tickets are $100 each with a charitable receipt of $25. Tables of 8 are also available for purchase. Tickets may be purchased by calling LydiaUnderhill @ 383-2404 or e-mail
