The Rector's Corner
Next Sunday after the 10 o’clock celebration of the Holy Eucharist, we have scheduled our Parish Harvest Thanksgiving Dinner. In the past, we have had a turkey on the menu with all the fixings; this year, however, it’s ham, coleslaw and scalloped potatoes to die for! Why the change in fare?
For two reasons: first, the price is right. As you know, at times over the summer, ham was very inexpensive; so, we bought an extra one in August when ordering for the Community Meal. Then, we had another ham donated to us shortly afterwards. Needless to say, potatoes are always a good price for their food value, as is cabbage. Secondly, it has been a challenge lately at our parish pot-luck dinners to ensure that there is enough food for everyone. This raises a concern for the Harvest Dinner since the vegetable dishes in the past were supplied a la pot-luck. So, what to do? Well, a few ‘peelers’ and a couple of cooks can prepare the spuds, carrots and cabbage required for coleslaw and scalloped potatoes without too much trouble. Who knows? It sounds good to me, and it’s definitely worth a try! But please don’t forget -- we still need your help with dessert!
In the end, our goal is to get people together for a meal, whether with turkey or ham,, in thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest we have been given by the Lord’s hand. This year, various groups and people (although we have lots of room for more) will provide us with some hymns and songs and skits while we eat. Why? Because it is possible that this will be a way for us to meet a new friend or two. Sometimes meeting the same people in a different setting for a common activity can help to break the ice. Anyway, don’t worry – there will be no pressure, just lots of possibilities!
In closing, the opportunity will be there for us to enjoy a few minutes together. Let’s make the most of it, and may the Lord of the Harvest make us truly thankful.

As Christians living in Canada, we struggle with all the demands and enticements of the world. Everyday we are bombarded with distractions and temptations, all kinds of desires and things compete for a place in our heart and mind. And yet as we heat in the Offertory Sentences: “Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” If, like me, you are seeking some peace in this department; if you are wondering how to lessen your anxieties and fears about money; if you know you need to renew your priorities, you may be interested in hearing Edward Salmon Jr., retired Bishop of South Carolina. He will be speaking on Saturday, October 17 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Trinity Church, Sussex. I can tell you from past experience that his talks are excellent. Two or three of us from the Parish Vestry are planning to attend and would have room for some others. The cost per person is $25.00 – if you need help with this cost, please let me know. Fr. Chris VanBuskirk+

The Rector's Corner
(Archdeacon R.B.Stockall)

Last spring the Rector asked me if I might consider another six week course to be delivered in St. Georges.
Seeing the good Lord has blessed me with good health, I replied in the affirmative. During the past few weeks, I have been reading on the subject of the talks:  "Miracles of the Bible".  I find it very stimulating. After all, we never stop learning in this life.
There is a wealth of helpful information in the scriptures and Our Lord is the key to our understanding of the Bible.  The beautiful Confirmation prayer asks God to grant us grace so that "we may daily increase in the Holy Spirit".  One of the many ways is to study the scriptures and that is the purpose behind the Monday night series of talks.
Remember the account of what happened on Easter Day?  Jesus was walking on the road to Emmaus with two of His followers.  He expounded the scriptures showing that, in fact, they all referred to Him.
He said to the Jews that if you really listen to the words of the Scriptures, you will understand who I am, the promised Messiah.  The Bible illuminates the truth that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is active in every book of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.  And that includes, of course, the Miracles of Scripture.
In light of this, we are going to examine a number of Miracles of both Old and New Testaments.
We shall begin on Monday, September 28 with the general theme of Miracles; what they are; what they are not and then each successive week, deal with the event itself.
So I invite you to come along each Monday night at 7:00 pm beginning on September 28 for a total of six weeks with a break on Thanksgiving Monday.  The course will be held in the hall and we generally have refreshments around 8:00 pm and by 8:30 pm or so, we are on our way home.
I look forward in seeing you.
 With every blessing,  RBS

And yet in today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus says to us, “No man can serve two masters…ye cannot serve God and Mammon.” ‘Mammon’ is an old word meaning “material wealth and possessions.” If, like me, you are seeking some peace in this department; if you are wondering how to lessen your anxieties and fears about money; if you know you need to renew your priorities, you may be interested in hearing Edward Salmon Jr., retired Bishop of South Carolina.
